Women's Tennis Defeats Marquette To Advance To BIG EAST Semifinals

CAYCE, S.C. --- The Xavier University women's tennis team began defense of its BIG EAST Championship with a 4-1 win over Marquette in Friday's quarterfinals at Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.

Xavier opened up a 1-0 advantage by capturing the doubles point. Senior Sydney Liggins and freshman Rachael Reichenbach held off a late rally to win 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, while Zoe Manion and Sophia Abelson won at No. 3, 6-1.

After Marquette evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 3 singles, Xavier recorded three consecutive singles wins to clinch the match. Senior Cristina Di Lorenzo won 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, freshman Rachael Reichenbach won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 singles and sophomore Sophia Abelson clinched the team win with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5.

No. 4 seed Xavier faces No. 1 seed St. John's at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the semifinals.
