
Women's Tennis Falls Against Cincinnati

Musketeers fall in tightly contested 4-3 battle
CINCINNATI - After taking three of the first four points, Xavier women's tennis fell in a tight 4-3 battle with crosstown rival Cincinnati on Wednesday afternoon. The match, moved to noon from its original start time to accommodate inclement weather, was held at the Jim and Mary Brockhoff Family Tennis Facility on Xavier's campus. Xavier moves to 8-9 overall and remain at 3-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Musketeers took doubles point after Rachel Reichenbach and Sydney Liggins opened play with a win in the No. 2 doubles set, 6-3, and Cristina Di Lorenzo and Lauren Ghidotti secured the win with the No. 1 doubles match, 6-4. Cincinnati topped Sophia Abelson and Zoe Manion, 6-4, in the No. 3 doubles slot.
In singles play, Vanina Iordanova put Xavier ahead 2-0 when she topped UC's Anna Philip in two sets, 7-5, 6-3, in the No. 6 singles spot.
Cincinnati's Lauren Bellinger topped Liggins, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 singles spot to cut the Musketeer advantage down to 2-1.
Xavier pushed its advantage back out to 3-1 after Abelson took the No. 5 singles point over Ali Miller, 6-2, 6-3.
In the No. 4 singles spot, UC's Caroline Morton came back after Reichernbach took the opening set, 6-3, claiming the point for UC by winning the final two sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Ghidotti battled with UC's Anotella Bramato in the No. 3 spot, falling in the first set, 6-3, and playing the second set to a 6-5 score before the match was retired, putting the Musketeers and the Bearcats in a 3-3 tie.
In the deciding match at the No. 2 spot, Di Lorenzo took the first set, 6-3, before Cincinnati's Kelly Poggensee-Wei took the final two sets, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Bearcats the 4-3 win.
Next up, Xavier faces off with another non-conference opponent, hosting Memphis on Friday, April 7 at 1:00 p.m.Â
