Xavier volleyball tops Duquesne, 3-0, on Friday morning

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Senior Kristen Massa and freshman Maya Krause combined for 28 kills on Friday morning, leading the Xavier volleyball team to a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-16, 25-22) over Duquesne in the team's season opener.

The match was the first of three for the Musketeers at the Hampton Inn Invitational at Bowling Green State University. Xavier returns to action at 5 p.m. against UIC.

NOTABLES

• Kristen Massa posted a match-high 15 kills with a .345 hitting percentage. The outside hitter also added a career-high three aces.

• Maya Krause was the only other Musketeer with 10 or more kills as the freshman posted 13 with a .500 hitting percentage. Morgan Finn added seven kills, while Alexis Newsome had six.

• Defensively, Meredith Klare recorded a match-high 17 digs. The junior added three aces as the Musketeers held a 6-3 advantage in category.

• Mackenzi Humm posted a match-high 37 assists to go along with three digs.

• Xavier has now won six of its last seven season openers, improving to 23-12 all-time. The Musketeers also improved to 34-5 all-time against the Dukes.

SET ONE

• Xavier broke open a 7-7 tie with an 8-2 run, taking a 15-9 advantage. The Musketeers never relinquished the lead and pulled away for a 25-16 set victory.

• Kristen Massa had six kills in the opening frame, while Maya Krause added five and a .833 hitting percentage.

• Meredith Klare posted 10 digs, while Mackenzi Humm had 16 assists.

SET TWO

• Xavier led from start to finish in the second set. Leading 12-10, the Musketeers posted an 8-2 run to take a 20-12 advantage.

• The Musketeers posted a .556 hitting percentage with Morgan Finn recording four kills on four attack attempts. Kristen Massa hit .750 with six kills.

SET THREE

• The final set had seven ties and two lead changes. Xavier led by as many as four, 20-16, before the Dukes battled back to get within two down the stretch (23-21). The Musketeers took advantage of an attacking error and added a kill from Kristen Massa to pull off the victory, 25-22.

• Maya Krause posted five kills, while Alexis Newsome and Kristen Masa added three each.
