Lauren Frilling, Kristen Massa post career highs in the win

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Xavier volleyball moved to 2-0 on the year with a four-set (29-27, 25-20, 19-25, 25-16) win over UIC in its second match of the Hampton Inn Invitational.

The two-day tournament is being hosted by Bowling Green State University at the Stroh Center.

NOTABLES

• Senior Kristen Massa posted a career-high 18 kills to go along with a career-high nine digs, just short of posting her first career double-double. She also added four blocks. Through two matches at the Hampton Inn Invitational, the Cincinnati native has 33 kills.

• Senior Lauren Frilling posted a career-high eight total blocks, while adding nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage. She added two aces and two digs.

• Senior Mackenzi Humm posted her 18th career double-double in the win, recording 22 assists and a team-high 17 digs. Freshman Nadia Dieudonne also had 22 assists in her first collegiate game.

• Xavier held a 14-4 advantage in total blocks. Maya Krause added four blocks, while Alexis Newsome and Laura Grossman both chipped in two.

• Xavier moved to 3-4 in the all-time series against the Flames.

SET ONE

• Trailing 24-22, the Musketeers got a kill from Kristen Massa and block from Alexis Newsome to tie the set for the 11th time. Xavier would score its final two points on another block followed by a Massa kill to seal the 29-27 victory. Neither team led by more than four points throughout the set.

• Kristen Massa hit .357 with six kills, while Mackenzi Humm had eight digs and eight assists.

SET TWO

• Xavier led by as many as seven, 15-8, in the second set before UIC closed within one (17-16) with an 8-2 run. After calling a timeout, The Musketeers scored 10 of the final 14 points to pull away for the 25-20 win.

SET THREE

• UIC never trailed and led by as many as eight, 17-9. Xavier battled back to get within three, 19-16, but the Flames would hang on for a 25-19 victory as the Musketeers dropped their first set of the season.

SET FOUR

• Xavier jumped out to a 10-4 advantage before pulling ahead by as many as 11 (20-9). The Musketeers won the set, 25-16.

• Lauren Frilling hit .800 with four kills, while adding three blocks.

• Xavier wraps up Hampton Inn Invitational action on Saturday, Aug. 26 against Bowling Green. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
