Comeback Falls Short Against Crosstown Rival Cincinnati

Xavier volleyball dropped a five-set match on Friday night
CINCINNATI – Xavier volleyball dropped a five-set (20-25, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15, 10-15) come-from-behind match against rival Cincinnati on Friday night at Cintas Center in front of 1,876 fans.
The Musketeers (3-2) battled back from a 2-0 deficit, only to see the Bearcats (1-3) edge out the win in the final set. Both teams return to action on Saturday on the second day of action at the Xavier Volleyball Tournament.
• Lauren Frilling posted a career-high 15 kills to go along with a .433 hitting percentage. The senior middle blocker added eight blocks and four digs.
• Xavier had four more blocks (12.5-8.5) than the Bearcats. Freshman Maya Krause added five blocks for the Musketeers. Xavier has had 10 or more blocks in three of its five matches this season.
• Junior Laura Grossman recorded a season-high 13 kills, while senior Kristen Massa added 11 kills and a career-high 28 digs.
• Meredith Klare had a career-high 32 digs. The junior libero added six assists.
• Freshman Nadia Dieudonne had a team-high 26 assists to go along with eight digs. Senior Mackenzi Humm added 21 assists and eight digs.
• Alexis Newsome chipped in eight kills, two digs and two blocks. The middle blocker posted a .421 hitting percentage.
• The opening frame featured eight ties and two lead changes. Cincinnati led by as many as five, 16-11, before the Musketeers fought back with a 7-4 run to get within two (20-18). The Bearcats responded by scoring five of the final seven points to win 25-20.
• Lauren Frilling hit .571 with four kills to pace the Musketeers, while Meredith Klare had eight digs.
• The Bearcats led by as many as five (23-18) down the stretch before the Musketeers engineered a 4-1 run to get within two (24-22) and force a Cincinnati timeout. The Bearcats got a kill from Carly Nolan out of the timeout to win the set, 25-22.
• Meredith Klare added 11 digs in set, while Lauren Frilling, Kristen Massa and Laura Grossman added three kills.
• Xavier opened the third set on a 6-2 run and led by as many as nine, 20-11. A Lauren Frilling kill on the final point of the set gave the Musketeers the 25-20 win.
• The Musketeers hit .378 in the frame, paced by Laura Grossman who hit .667 with four kills. Lauren Frilling and Kristen Massa each added four kills.
• The Bearcats led 10-8 before the Musketeers ended the set on a 17-5 run capped by a Samantha Foti kill. Meredith Klare paced Xavier with eight digs, while Lauren Frilling had four blocks.
• Cincinnati opened the set on a 7-4 run to force a Xavier timeout. The Bearcats never relinquished the lead, holding on for the 15-10 victory.
• Xavier continues tournament play on Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. against Western Michigan. The Musketeers also take on Texas State at 7 p.m.
