EAST LANSING, MICH. – The Xavier Musketeers faced a tough opponent in the Michigan State Spartans losing 4-0.
Head coach Doug Matthews commented on the match, "Michigan State has a good program and they outplayed us today on most courts. We knew they would be really solid and not give us anything. Our top three players Ahmeir, Lauren and Sophia played well today and all had chances to win had we played the match out. Michigan State's strength is in the bottom half of their lineup, but I would have liked to see us be much more competitive there."
In singles play, freshman Ahmeir Kyle started at No. 1 singles for the Musketeers. In her first match, Kyle dropped the first set 6-2, but battled in the second set 5-4 before the match was called. Head Coach Doug Matthews commented on Kyle playing No. 1 singles saying, "Ahmeir performed extremely well considering it was her first match in a Xavier uniform" and that "she was ready for the challenge today."
Seniors Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson played No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Both players were leading their matches after winning the first set 7-5, but were not able to be finished. Elizabeth Bagerbaseh, Rachael Reichenbach and Lauren Fitz-Randolph rounded out the singles lineup.
In doubles play, Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson started at No. 1 doubles. The match went unfinished, but was closely fought 5-4.
Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Rachael Reichenbach were the duo at No. 2 doubles, but dropped their first match of the season 6-1. The No. 3 doubles the team of Ahmeir Kyle/Zoe Manion fell 6-3.
Looking ahead to next match Doug Matthews said, "Bowling Green on Sunday is a new day and we need everyone to be ready to play."
The Musketeers next match is on Sunday Jan. 21 against Bowling Green.
