Swimming Travels to Akron Zips Classic

Musketeers will compete Friday and Saturday
CINCINNATI – Xavier men's and women's swimming travels to Akron this weekend to compete in the Akron Zips Invitational on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13. Event on Friday begin at 5:00 p.m., and Saturday's start times are 10:00 a.m. for the morning session and 5:00 p.m. for the evening session.

OPPONENTS |
- On the women's side, Xavier will compete against Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Denison and Miami (Ohio).
- Xavier's men will compete against Cincinnati, Cleveland State, Denison and Miami (OH).
- Xavier last faced off with Akron's women in a home meet in 2016. The Musketeer women fell, 170-72, to the Zips, but 16 different athletes scored on the Xavier side.
- Akron, which only fields a women's team, won its fifth-straight MAC Championship last season, and return six All-MAC First Team selections, including Freshman Swimmer of the Year Paulina Nogaj, and three All-MAC Second Team selections.
- Xavier's women will also go against Akron at the CSU Magnus Cup in mid-November.
- Last season, Xavier faced Cincinnati with Virginia Tech at Cincinnati, with the Xavier women falling to Virginia Tech, 201-35, and to Cincinnati, 187-47,
- Xavier's men fell to Virginia Tech, 198-38, and Cincinnati, 188-49.
- Cincinnati's men won the American Athletic Conference title last season, while the women finished second.
- Xavier will also face UC on January 12, 2019 to open the spring portion of the schedule.
- Last season, Xavier hosted Cleveland State for the only home meet of the season, posting wins of 161-97 on the women's side and 162-98 for the men.
- The Xavier women took the top spot in 11 of 14 events
- Xavier's men claimed first in 10 of 14 events for the first sweep of Cleveland State in program history.
- CSU's men finished second at the Horizon League Championships while the women finished third.
- Xavier will also face Cleveland State on Oct. 27 in Cleveland, and travel back to CSU in mid-November for the CSU Magnus Cup.
- At last season's meet, Denison took the win, 145-117, on the women's side and 171-86, on the men's side.
- The Musketeers took the top spot in six events on the women's side.
- On the men's side, Matthew Dyer took the top spot in the 200 breast, and also collected a second-place finish in the 100 breast.
- Denison's men won the NCAA DIII National Championship last season, while the women finished fourth.
- Xavier will also travel to Denison on Nov. 3 for a dual meet.
- At last season's meet with Miami, Xavier's women fell by a final score of 184-75, while the men fell by a final score of 206-55.
- Miami's women finished fourth at the MAC Championships last season while the men finished third.
- Xavier will also face Miami on Feb. 2, 2019, in the last meet before the BIG EAST Championships.

WOMEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- Xavier was last in action at Louisville, against a Cardinals squad that finished fifth in the NCAA Championships last season. The Musketeers fell by a score of 185-73.
- Xavier opened the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200 medley relay for the Xavier 'A' squad, Ali Fort, Lydia Schaeffer, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Conners.
- Emma Kauffeld led the way in the distance events, taking third in the 1000 free and scoring in second place in the 500 free.
- Emily Conners led the Musketeers in the freestyle sprints, taking fourth in the 50 free and scoring in second in the 100 free.
- Lydia Schaeffer posted a pair of team-leading performances, in the breaststroke events, placing fourth in the 100 breast and scoring in second in the 200 breast.
- Caroline Gaertner also led the Musketeers in a pair of events, the 100 back, finishing fourth, and the 100 fly, scoring in second.
- Emily Saugstad led the Musketeers in the 200 free with a fifth-place finish.
- Taylor Hogan finished the 200 fly in fourth place to lead Xavier.
- Ali Fort led the Musketeers in the 200 back, scoring in second place.
- Alison Herman scored in second place to lead the Musketeers in the 200 IM.
- Xavier closed out the meet with Emily Conners, Tianna Vozar, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Saugstad scoring in second in the 400 free relay.

MEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- Xavier's men were last in action against Louisville, a top-10 team at last season's NCAA Championships. Xavier fell by a score of 172.5-81.5.
- Xavier opened the meet with a fourth place finish in the 200 medley relay for Alex Sironen, Roark Lundal, David Bunnell and Enrique Hernandez.
- Matthew Dyer led the Musketeers in three events, taking the lead in both breaststroke events, placing third in the 100 breast and scoring in second in the 200 breast. Dyer also scored in second in the 200 IM.
- Nick Mahoney led the Musketeers in the distance freestyle events, finishing the 1000 free in fourth and the 500 free scoring in second.
- Enrique Hernandez led the Musketeers in freestyle sprints, finishing fifth in the 50 free and scoring in second in the 100 free.
- Brandon Abboud led the Musketeers in the butterfly, finishing the 200 fly in fifth and scoring in second in the 100 fly.
- Ben Quon led Xavier in the 200 free, finishing fourth.
- Alex Sironen led Xavier in the 100 back, finishing third.
- Nathan Runyon led the Musketeers in the 200 back, scoring in second.
- Ben Quon, Brandon Abboud, Jared Ritz and Enrique Hernandez scored in second place in the 400 free relay to close out the meet.

- Xavier will travel to West Virginia on Oct. 19 to face the Mountaineers, as well as Seton Hall, in a two-day meet. Events begin Friday at 6:00 p.m. and continue Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
