CINCINNATI – After two days of competition at the UC Tennis Pam Whitehead Invitational, Xavier women's tennis came away with the top two doubles finishes and a pair of team wins in the hidden dual format. The Musketeers faced off against host Cincinnati, as well as Chattanooga and Illinois Chicago.
"We are very happy with our doubles this weekend. Honestly, we didn't know what lineup we were going to play until the night before the tournament," said head coach Doug Matthews. "We have spent a lot of time working on doubles in practice and have tried about every combination possible. Our energy was impressive, and regardless of the lineup we use in the spring that has to stay constant. In singles we had some mixed results, but hopefully we can use that as motivation to work hard in the offseason."
In a scoring format with points based on wins at each playing position, beginning at six points for the No. 1 position, Sophia Abelson and Anna Letto came away with 18 points, winning the doubles No. 1 spot against all three teams.
Ahmeir Kyle and Emily Thomas finished second in the doubles standings with 15 points after sweeping all three matches at the No. 2 spot.
Kaitlin Ruether, Rachael Reichenbach, Natalie Moyer and Hunter Roper combined to pick up two doubles win in the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, with the Musketeers finishing the weekend at 9-2 in doubles play.
In singles play, Xavier finished 11-9 on the weekend. Rachael Reichenbach, finished as the leading scorer in doubles play, going 2-1 playing in the No. 2 and 3 spots to collect nine points. Anna Letto, playing No. 4 and 5, and Hunter Roper, playing No. 5 and 6, both went 2-1 in singles play as well. Natalie Moyer finished 2-0, playing in the No. 6 and No. 7 spot.
Against Chattanooga, Xavier held a sizable advantage in singles play, finishing 5-1 and won 3-1 on the doubles point for what would be a 6-1 win in traditional dual format.
Against Illinois Chicago, Xavier split doubles play, going 3-3, but went 2-1 in doubles play for what would be a 4-3 team win.
Xavier dominated doubles play against Cincinnati, going 4-0, but went 3-5 in singles play, with two of those wins coming in the No. 7 and No. 8 spots.
