No. 5 Xavier Men's Soccer Falls in Penalty Kicks in BIG EAST Quarterfinals at No. 4 Marquette

MILWAUKEE – No. 5 Xavier men's soccer fell in penalty kicks, 7-6, after an epic 2-2 match in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals against No. 4 Marquette at Valley Fields.
The Musketeers close their season at 6-7-6 overall after a 4-4-1 run through the BIG EAST regular season.
Marquette moves to 7-8-2 and advances to the league semifinals for the first time since 2013.
XU struck first on a Derrick Otim goal in the 12th minute before a pair of unanswered goals by Marquette in the second half. Samson Sergi then delivered his fourth goal in a week to equalize the match in the 84th minute, helping to force overtime.
After a back-and-forth battle in extra time, the match came down to penalty kicks. It was the second straight season XU had gone to PK's in a playoff match after advancing to the title match last year against Butler.
Xavier converted its first four chances and saw Colin Hanley make two huge saves before BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Luis Barraza made two stops of his own in the eighth and ninth rounds.

72' | Marquette 2-1 | Diego Nuñez got free in the box, finishing off a long run by Patrick Seagrist to give Marquette the lead.
83' | Tied 2-2 | Simen Hestnes played a ball wide to Cameron Belle, who got open on the right flank. Belle curled a ball into the mixer and found Sergi, who chipped it to the back post for the equalizer.

• Xavier made its sixth straight appearance in the league playoffs. The Musketeers have never missed the six-team field or finished under .500 in league play since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
• XU moves to 3-5-2 in BIG EAST Tournament action all-time. XU is 0-1-1 in two tourney appearances as the No. 5 seed.
• Marquette leads the all-time series 6-3-1, but the matchup is 3-2-1 in favor of XU in the last six meetings. Marquette won all three meetings prior to the two schools entering the league.
• Derrick Otim scored his second goal of the season and first since XU's home opener against Cincinnati Christian. The junior had four points in XU's last two matches following a two assist performance last week against Butler.
• Simen Hestnes contributed a pair of assists, giving him a team-best eight helpers on the year. He leads the BIG EAST with 24 points this season (8g, 8a) and had at least one point in nine of XU's last 13 matches.
• Samson Sergi's goal was his team-leading ninth on the season and fourth in his past two matches.
• Cameron Belle added his fourth assist of the season on Sergi's second half equalizer.
• Xavier played in its eighth overtime of the season. The Musketeers were 1-1-6 in overtime in 2018.
• Shots were even 14-14 in the match, but XU held an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. The Musketeers also had a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
