02.04.18 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, Ohio – Xavier women's tennis traveled to Miami (Ohio) to take on the RedHawks in a rematch from the Miami Invitational during the fall season. Xavier defeated Miami (Ohio) in a thrilling match, 4-3, making the Musketeers victorious in their last four match ups against the RedHawks.
Head Coach Doug Matthews was thrilled with his team's performance, "Today was a great road win. It's been a while since we have been able to win a match after losing the doubles point so hopefully we can gain some confidence there. Everyone played well in singles but they just played better in a couple of spots. Our 4-6 were great today and got us three pretty quick wins. Lauren Ghidotti played well in the clutch yet again and sealed the deal. She is now the only player in our program to ever go 4-0 against Miami (Ohio) as a team. We played our best tennis of the season this weekend and need to keep building on this momentum."
In singles, freshman Ahmeir Kyle fought hard but lost 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles senior Lauren Ghidotti finishes her career with a 4-0 record against the RedHawks after winning in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. Junior Sophia Abelson battled to a third set but dropped her first singles match of the season at No. 3 singles 4-6, 7-5, 0-1 (4-10). Sophomore Rachael Reichenbach improved to 4-2 on the season winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Reichenbach has won four of her last five singles matches. Senior Elizabeth Bagerbaseh and Junior Lauren Fitz-Randolph took care business at No. 5 and 6 singles winning in straight sets.
In doubles, the No. 2 team of Ahmeir Kyle and Rachael Reichenbach won the lone doubles point for the Musketeers, 6-3. The team of Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson dropped one a close one, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles, and the No. 3 team of Zoe Manion and Elizabeth Bagerbaseh fell 6-2.
The Musketeers won both of their matches from weekend defeating Lipscomb (7-0) on Friday and Miami (Ohio) on Sunday. Both matches build momentum for the Musketeers going into their BIG EAST opener against Butler on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
