Men's Tennis Shuts Out BIG EAST Rival Villanova

CINCINNATI, OH. – Xavier men's tennis earned an impressive win over BIG EAST rival, Villanova, Saturday afternoon 7-0. The Musketeers improve their record to 3-12 (1-1 BIG EAST).
Gabriel Araujo and Jack Dykema kicked of doubles action in the No. 1 spot, passing Villanova 6-3. Following in the No. 2 spot, Matthew Graft and Connor LaFavre also earned a 6-3 Musketeer victory. Brett Winters and Michael Lee did not finish their match but were down 3-5 when the match was called.
Jack Dykema earned Xavier's first victory in singles topping Villanova's Stefan Suarez 6-3, 6-4. In No. 2, Brett Winters earned another point for Xavier with a 6-4, 6-2 score. Gabriel Araujo earned a No. 3 singles victory with a 7-6(5), 6-2 advantage.
At the No. 4 spot, Matthew Graft always was victorious ending the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win. After dropping the first set at No. 5 singles 4-6, Jan Vrba bounced back to control the match winning the follow two sets 6-3, 10-5. Connor LaFavre earned Xavier's final singles victory in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 7-5.
The Musketeers return to the court Sunday, March 25 as they play host to Eastern Kentucky. The match is setup to start at 5 p.m. ET and will take place at Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club.
Head coach Doug Matthews reflects on today's match in hopes of tomorrow, "Today is the best match we played all season. It feels great to get a Big East win. We need to carry this momentum into tomorrow and build on today."
