Men's Soccer Defeats Saint Louis in Seventh Annual "Devin's Game" for Down Syndrome Awareness

Nearly 1,000 attend event, which raised over $4,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati
CINCINNATI – Simen Hestnes and Derrick Otim found the net as Xavier men's soccer defeated Saint Louis 2-1 on Saturday in the Seventh Annual Down Syndrome Awareness Spring Classic at XU Soccer Complex.
The match drew nearly 1,000 fans and raised over $4,000 to benefit "Devin's Team" as part of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati Annual Buddy Walk. The team is named for head coach Andy Fleming's daughter, Devin, who was born with Down Syndrome in 2011.
• 20' - A foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for Simen Hestnes, who beat the SLU keeper to put Xavier up 1-0.
• 26' - Derrick Otim gathered in a rebound off a free kick by Simen Hestnes, taking a shot from the top of the box and scoring to the upper left corner.
• 77' - Saint Louis' Saadiq Mohammed gained possession in the final third, playing the ball up to Leo Navaes for a goal that broke the shutout.
• Saint Louis outshot Xavier 10-8, but the Musketeers held a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
• XU took five corners against four for the Billikens.
• Each goalkeeper made three saves in the match.
• The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati (DSAGC) is a 501C-3 non-profit organization established in 1981 with a history of responding to the changing needs of individuals with Down syndrome.
• The DSAGC serves southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky and southeastern Indiana including Hamilton, Butler, Brown, Clermont, Warren, Highland, Clinton, Adams, Boone, Campbell, Kenton and Dearborn counties. The organization's constituency is comprised of 1,300 individuals with Down syndrome of all ages, 3,000 family members and over 300 local professionals.
• The DSAGC is funded primarily through special events, such as the Buddy Walk. Other sources of revenue include donations and foundation support. The DSAGC is self-sustaining. The funds raised by the organization remain in the local community.
• At least 22 players to have appeared in the match have gone on to play professionally, including nine former Musketeers.
