09.17.18 | Men's Soccer
NEW YORK - Zachary Nelson, Cameron Belle and Matt Nance were each honored by the BIG EAST Conference for their parts in a 1-0-1 week for Xavier men's soccer, which extended its season-long unbeaten streak to six with a draw against No. 3/6 Kentucky and a road win at Georgetown.
Nelson was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week and Belle was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while Nance was selected for the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
The Musketeers improved to 3-0-3 with the results and are off to their best start since 2012.
Redshirt sophomore Zachary Nelson was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week after making 13 total saves last week and earning a clean sheet against No. 3/6 Kentucky. In league action, despite allowing two Hoya goals to score, Nelson set a career-high with seven saves in a 3-2 Xavier victory. One of the goals scored was a PK.
On Tuesday against Kentucky, Nelson made six saves en route to a 0-0 draw. For the week, Nelson's goals against average was 0.90.
For the season, Nelson has four shutouts and 0.50 goals against average.
Belle was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the first time after scoring the game-tying goal on the road in an eventual 3-2 win over Georgetown. It was Belle's first career goal and it came in the 65th minute to level the score after a Hoya PK goal just before halftime. Belle also played 36 minutes of the 0-0 double overtime draw with No. 6 Kentucky.
Nance assisted on all three goals in Xavier's 3-2 win at Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, while also contributing to Xavier's fourth shutout of the season, 0-0, against No. 6 Kentucky on Tuesday. The three assists were a career-high.
Xavier returns to action at home on Friday, Sept. 21, hosting St. John's at 7 p.m. at XU Soccer Complex.
