Women's Golf Looks to Build on Strong Start at Nittany Lion Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Musketeers will look to build on a strong start this weekend at the Nittany Lion Invitational after tying for fourth in their first fall tournament of the season. They will be squaring off against a large field of competition, including BIG EAST rivals Georgetown and Seton Hall.
This weekend is the first time Xavier has played in the tournament since 2007.Â
The Musketeers bring all three of their top-11 finishers from the William & Mary Invitational, including Junior Mikayla Fitzpatrick (T4), Senior Mikayla Smith (T9 - participated as an individual), and Freshman Kayla Benge (T11).
After her performance in Williamsburg, Mikayla Fitzpatrick earned BIG EAST Golfer fo the Week honors. She shot two rounds at even par and carded a 220 (+4) for the tournament.Â
Kayla Benge was a leader in the field in her first collegiate match at the William & Mary Invitational. She finished the tournament tied for eleventh with a total of 223 (+7).Â
Mikayla Smith finished out the first tournament of the season in a tie for ninth with a total of 222 (+6). She set the 18-hole scoring record for Xavier in Williamsburg, where she shot a 66 (-6) in the second round.Â
Morgan Tinsley finished the first tournament of the season in a tie for 27th with a total of 233 (+17), respectively.
The Musketeers will also bring two golfers who are making their debut for Xavier, Lyndsey Hunnell ,who is a graduate transfer from Virginia, and Abby Kiefer, a freshman from Dublin, Ohio.

The Musketeers will play 54 holes over two days at the event, 36 holes will be played on Saturday, September 22, and Sunday, September 23, will be the championship round with 18 holes being played.Â
Both days of the meet will be 9 a.m. shotgun starts.Â

There are a total of 16 teams participating this weekend: Akron, Bucknell, High Point, Ohio, Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, Rollins, Rutgers, Santa Clara, Navy, Washington, Yale, Youngstown, BIG EAST rivals Georgetown and Seton Hall, and Xavier.
