Summary |
• No. 10 Marquette flexed their muscles early, taking a lead and holding it throughout the set. While they never scored more than four points in a row, Marquette was able to communicate effectively on defense and prevent Xavier from getting back-to-back points until the score was 16-8. Facing set point, Xavier would string together three points in a row, but it was far too late, as Marquette took the set 25-15.
• Set Two was a much different story for Xavier. Marquette dug themselves into an early whole, committing three attack errors to give Xavier a 4-2 lead. They would tie the score at 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6, but they never would take the lead. The Musketeers' lead grew steadily until a breakthrough at 15-12 saw four-straight kills and a service ace put Xavier on top by eight. Marquette didn't go quietly, but the deficient was too much to overcome as Xavier clinched Set 2 by a score of 25-19.
• There were little mistakes early in Set Three, as each team only had one error until the score was 9-9. Xavier won the next two points after uncharacteristic mistakes by the Golden Eagles, but they regrouped with five kills to retake the lead at 14-13. At 16-16, Marquette went on a 5-0 run, only to be answered by a Xavier 6-1 run. At 22-22 in the third set against the No. 10 team in the nation, Xavier had expended most of it's energy, and Marquette took the set 25-23.
• Marquette kept momentum to start Set Four. They won the first three points and held the lead for most of the set. the teams traded one or two points at a time until the score was 16-13 in favor of Marquette. Then, the Golden Eagles put four points together off of three Xavier errors, and they closed the match on a 6-1 run to win Set Four 25-16.
