Women's Golf Heads West to Open Spring Season at Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Women's golf is headed for warm and sunny Arizona this weekend for the Rio Verde Invitational to begin their spring season. The invitational, hosted by Western Michigan, is a three-day, 54-hole meet that includes a field of 18 teams.
The women are coming off a successful fall schedule where they won the Fall MAC Preview in Noblesville and posted two other top five finishes. The Musketeers also broke multiple school records throughout the fall, including: individual 18-hole round (Mikayla Smith 66, -6), team 54-hole record (883, +19), low team 18-hole round and versus par (284, -4).
XU also holds the number one ranking in the BIG EAST conference with a scoring average of 298.00 and a versus par of 11.60.
Mikayla Fitzpatrick is ranked number one in the BIG EAST going into the spring season with an average score of 72.93 and a versus par of 1.33. She played extremely well in the fall with three top-10 finishes in the William & Mary Invitational (T4th), The Princess Anne Invitational (T8th), and the MAC Fall Preview (3rd).
Mikayla Smith heads into the spring ranked seventh in the BIG EAST after a record-setting fall by breaking the XU 18-hole scoring record at the William & Mary Invitation with a 66 (-6). Her average score is 74.93 and she has a versus par of 3.33 over 15 rounds. Smith also recorded two top-10 finishes at the William & Mary Invitational (T9th) and Fall MAC Preview (8th).
Lyndsey Hunnell sits fourth in the BIG EAST with a scoring average of 74.17 and a versus par of 2.67 with one top-five finish during the Fall MAC Preview. XU is also bringing Andie Shukow (average of 76.78) and Amy Kucera (average of 81.00) to the Rio Verde Invitational.
Xavier has won this event in the 2013-14 season on the same Quail Run course.
