
Baseball Falls Just Short in Ninth Inning Comeback Bid at No. 13 Texas

Jake Shepksi goes 3-of-5 at the plate for second-straight game
AUSTIN, Texas - Xavier baseball took an early lead on No. 13 Texas, but a five-run inning for the Longhorns erased the Musketeer advantage in the fifth inning, sending the game to the ninth with XU down four. Xavier made a late push but fell just short in its comeback bid, falling, 6-5, in the second of three games in Austin.
Xavier took a two-run lead on scores in the first and the fourth innings. Texas scored five in the fifth to take the lead, and added an insurance run in the eighth to send the game to the ninth with Texas leading 6-2. The Musketeers manufactured three runs in the top of the ninth, but were unable to get the tying run across the plate.
Xavier closes out the series tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. ET.

FIRST INNING | With one out, Ryan Altenberger doubled down the left field line, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Conor Grammes hit a ground ball to second base, allowing Altenberger to come home and put the Musketeers up, 1-0.
FOURTH INNING | With one out, Matt Warkentin singled to left field, Luke Stephenson singled through the left side and Andrew Sexton walked to load the bases. Warkentin scored on a passed ball to put Xavier up, 2-0.
NINTH INNING | Xavier led off the inning with a walk for Altenberger and a single to center field for Grammes, forcing UT to change pitchers. Allbry Major singled up the middle to load the bases an Jack Housinger singled to left field, bringing Altenberger home to cut the Texas lead to three, 6-3.
With the bases still loaded and no outs, Jake Shepski singled to right to bring Grammes in, cutting UT's advantage to 6-4. Warkentin grounded into a double play, bringing Major home, setting the score at 6-5.

- Jake Shepski went 3-of-5 on the day, his second straight three-hit game. Shepski extended his hitting streak to six games, and his on-base streak to nine. The graduate student also collected an RBI in the ninth inning.
- Allbry Major went 2-of-5 at the plate, collecting an RBI and scoring a run.
- Ryan Altenberger went 1-of-3 and collected two walks to bring his season total to 20, just one shy of Shepski's team high 21. Altenberger scored a pair of runs on the day.
