Chris Givin hits a grand slam to fuel five-run eighth

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A five-run eighth inning wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit for Xavier baseball, as the Musketeers fell 8-5 at Ohio State on Tuesday evening.

OSU took a five-run lead in the first two innings, and added three more in the fourth to go ahead 8-0. Xavier responded late, collecting five runs in the eighth inning, including four on a Chris Givin grand slam, but were unable to close the gap completely as the Musketeers moved to 14-23 on the season.

Xavier, which is 5-1 in BIG EAST play, returns to conference action on Thursday, hosting Butler for a three-game series at Hayden Field.

XU AT THE PLATE

Chris Givin hit his second home run of the season, a grand slam, to lead the Musketeers with four RBI. Givin finished 1-of-4 at the plate.
Conor Grammes went 1-of-3, with a walk, at the plate with a run scored.
After coming in for Allbry Major in left field in the bottom of the seventh, Ryan Fournier went 1-of-1 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
Major also finished 1-of-3 at the plate.
Luke Franzoni scored a run after collecting a pair of walks on the day. Andrew Sexton and Kody Darcy each also colleced a base on balls.

XU ON THE MOUND

Nathan Berg made his first start of the season, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing five runs on six hits and a walk.
Matt Kent entered for the final out of the second inning, pitching 2.1 innings with one strike out, and three earned runs on five hits and two walks.
Marko Boricich pitch 2.0 innings, striking out a pair with no runs on one hit.
Seth Klaiber pitched the seventh, striking out two with one hit and no runs.
Nick Zwack pitched the eighth, with one strike out, and no runs on no hits and a walk.

HOW THEY SCORED

EIGHTH INNING | Andrew Sexton led off the inning with a walk, and Conor Grammes and Luke Franzoni collected walks as well to load the bases win one out. Ryan Fournier hit a single to left field to bring Sexton home to bring cut the OSU lead to 8-1, leaving the bases loaded for Chris Givin. Givin hit a grand slam to left center to cut the lead down to three, 8-5.
