Men's Tennis Falls in Opening Round of BIG EAST Championships

Musketeers fall 5-1 to No. 1 seed St. John's
CINCINNATI - The Xavier men's tennis team's season came to a close on Friday following a 4-1 loss in the opening round of the BIG EAST Championships. The Musketeers fell to the No. 1 seeded St. John's Red Storm.
Xavier started strong in doubles play, taking the first point of the match. In the No. 1 spot, Brett Winters and Jack Dykema defeated St. John's, 6-4. Teammates Michael Lee and Jan Vrba followed the effort in the No. 3 spot with a 7-6 victory, securing the first point for the Musketeers.
Matthew Graft and Connor LaFavre fell in the No. 2 doubles spot, 6-4.
The Musketeers struggled in singles competition, starting in the No. 1 spot. Brett Winters fell 6-3, 6-4, and Jack Dykema fell 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles spot. The Red Storm then took a 3-1 lead following a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Michael Lee in the No. 4 spot. Trent Smith then fell in the No. 6 spot to Ognjen Trejguy, 6-0, 6-0. This gave St. John's their fourth and final point. St. John's took the 4-1 victory and will move on to the second round on Saturday.
Connor LaFavre trailed in the No. 5 spot, 7-6, 5-1, when the final point was decided, while teammate Matthew Graft trailed St. John's 6-2, 6-6 in the No. 4 spot as St. John's claimed their final point.
