Musketeers fall to DePaul, 4-3, in final round of tournament play

CAYCE, S.C. - Xavier women's tennis fell, 4-3, to DePaul on Monday afternoon in the Championship round of the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Championships. The Musketeers' winning-streak has come to an end at 20 straight, which set a school record. The Musketeers also tied a school record with 22 wins on the season, which was last done in 2003-04.

THE MATCH

The Musketeers started out with a 6-2 victory in the No. 1 doubles spot from Ahmeir Kyle and Emily Thomas. The Blue Demons then came back and won the next two doubles matchups to secure the doubles point.

Rachael Reichenbach and Hunter Roper fell, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot, while Sophia Abelson and Kaitlin Ruether fell, 6-2, in the No. 2 spot.

In singles play, DePaul extended their lead to 2-0 following a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 1 spot over Ahmeir Kyle. Then, in the No. 4 spot, Rachael Reichenbach fell, 6-2, 6-3. Kaitlin Ruether responded in the No. 3 singles spot, defeating DePaul 6-4, 7-6, to give Xavier their first point of the match.

Hunter Roper grabbed a 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 victory in the No. 6 spot to bring the Musketeers back within a point, setting the score at 3-2. Sophia Abelson then tied the score, 3-3, following a 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 win in the No. 2 singles spot.

The BIG EAST Championship came down to the No. 3 singles spot where Xavier's Emily Thomas fell in a hard fought effort, 7-5, 5-7, 3-6. This was Xavier's first loss since the Musketeers fell to Michigan State on Feb. 1.
