Damien Richard earned career-high nine strikeouts through seven innings

OXFORD, OH -- Xavier dropped the series opener to the Seton Hall Pirates Friday afternoon, 3-1. The Musketeers fall to 20-26 overall and 9-3 in BIG EAST action.

The Pirates jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning that was sparked by a two lead-off hits. Seton Hall extended its lead, 2-0, in the third inning on an unearned earned run after an RBI double.

After a lead-off single to center, Conor Grammes advanced the bases when Chris Givin singled followed by a Matt Warkentin single. Grammes tagged and touched home when Jack Housinger flew out to center to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Pirates extend their lead, 3-1, in the fourth on a leadoff triple and advanced home on a single to center.

Game two of the three-game series takes place Saturday, May 4 at Hayden Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET

XU AT THE PLATE

Conor Grammes went 3-4 from the plate, including a lead-off double down the left field line in the first inning. Grammes also connected on two singles.
Chris Givin had two singles on the day, finishing 2-5.
Matt Warkentin, 2-4 from the plate, contributed to the third inning rally with a single to load the bases.
Natale Monastra singled through the left side in the bottom of the fourth.
Xavier collected eight hits and four walks on the day.

XU ON THE MOUND

Damien Richard pitched a complete seven innings, earning nine strikeouts, a new career high.
Taylor Williams pitched two shutout innings to end the game.
