Conor Grammes Selected By Arizona Diamondbacks in Fifth Round of MLB Draft

CINCINNATI - Xavier junior pitcher Conor Grammes was selected in the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, going to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth round.
Grammes' selection marks the fourth-straight season a Musketeers has been selected in the draft, and the 13th time in the past 15 years a Xavier player has been selected.
The right-hander was an unanimous selection to the 2019 All-BIG EAST First Team after posting a 3.95 ERA in 14 appearances, the best mark among Xavier's starters. Grammes allowed 30 earned runs on 48 hits in 68.1 innings of work, finishing with five wins.
Grammes had a team-leading 79 strikeouts in 2019, including 38 Ks of BIG EAST opponents during the regular season. He set a career-best mark with a 16-strikeout performance in a 1-0 walk-off win over Georgetown, just one off the Xavier single game record of 17 strikeouts.
Grammes has a career ERA of 5.02 in 122.0 innings pitched through 49 appearances at Xavier. He collected 143 strikeouts in three seasons as a Musketeer.
At the plate, Grammes, who primarily filled the designated hitter spot in his junior season, led the Musketeers with a .333 average and a team-high 75 hits in 58 games. Among those hits were 14 doubles to go with three triples and eight home runs with a slugging percentage of .524. Grammes also had 35 walks on the season with a team-best on-base percentage of .428 overall and .513 in BIG EAST play.
Grammes has a career average of .334, which ranks 11th on Xavier's all-time list for career batting averages. Grammes collected 35 doubles, five triples and 25 home runs in three seasons as a Musketeer. Grammes also stole 15 bases in three seasons as a Musketeer, including 12 in 14 attempts during the 2019 season.
Grammes entered 2019 as the Preseason BIG EAST Co-Player of the Year. Grammes was also named the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team honors as a freshman in 2017 as Xavier claimed the Conference Title and earned an NCAA Regional Berth.
Following last season, Grammes was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 35th round of the 2018 MLB First Year Player Draft as a draft-eligible sophomore.
