Freemantle, Jones Match Career Highs in Scoring on Wednesday Night

Xavier falls to No. 10 seed DePaul, 71-67, at Madison Square Garden
NEW YORK - Zach Freemantle and Tyrique Jones both matched their career highs in scoring on Wednesday night as the Musketeers dropped a 71-67 contest to No. 10 seed DePaul in the opening round of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Musketeers moved to 19-13 on the year, while the Blue Demons improved to 16-16.
• Xavier jumped out to an early 9-5 lead capped by a Zach Freemantle dunk at the 16:16 mark. The Musketeers went on a 6-4 run to take their largest lead of the half, 15-9, with 12:59 on the clock.
• DePaul responded by going on a 26-9 run capped by a Charlie Moore layup at the 3:45 mark, forcing a Xavier timeout. The Musketeers bounced back with a 7-0 run capped by pair of Tyrique Jones free throws to get Xavier within four points (35-31). The two teams exchanged three pointers in the closing minute as the Blue Demons took a 38-34 advantage into the locker room.
• Zach Freemantle led the Musketeers with 14 points at the break on 6-for-11 shooting. Tyrique Jones added 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting.
• Xavier held a 15-13 advantage on the glass with Jason Carter pacing the Musketeers with four rebounds.
• DePaul pushed its lead out to seven points (53-46) at the 13:31 mark before the Musketeers went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 53. Naji Marshall capped the run with a jumper inside the paint to force a DePaul timeout with 11:04 on the clock. Xavier scored four unanswered points coming out of the timeout, taking a 57-53 advantage and forcing another DePaul timeout.
• Xavier matched its largest lead of the game, 59-53, with 9:18 left in regulation before the Blue Demons used a 10-5 run to regain the lead, 64-63. DePaul never relinquished the lead and led by as many as five points down the stretch (70-65 - 00:16).
• Back-to-back free throws from Naji Marshall with 10 seconds left in regulation got the Musketeers within three points (70-67) before Paul Reed sank a free throw in the closing seconds, sealing the four-point win for the Blue Demons.
