CINCINNATI – Xavier Athletics celebrated the year in Musketeer sports on Sunday night, when the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the fifth annual XSPYS. The event was held on Twitter via @Xavier_SAAC.
Xavier student-athletes voted on a number of categories, on and off the playing field, ranging from Best Play to Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
Lauren Hanlon was named Comeback Athlete of the Year after returning from an injury that limited her to only two matches from 2017-18. She led the volleyball team in kills (255) last season, while ranking third in blocks (65).
Maddie Thiss (Women's Soccer) was named Female Rookie of the Year after helping the Musketeers capture the program's first BIG EAST Championship, while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The defender helped the Musketeers post a 0.71 goals against average with 12 shutouts.
Andrew Martin (Men's Swimming) was named Male Rookie of the Year after helping the Musketeers capture their second consecutive BIG EAST Championship. He earned medals in four events, highlighted by a gold medal in the one-mile freestyle.
Samantha Dewey was named Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year. Women's soccer claimed Team of the Year honors after posting a 17-4-2 overall record, while capturing the program's first BIG EAST Championship. The Musketeers also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
