Incoming freshman Blessing Nwaozuzu also a semifinalist in A-Singles Bracket
CLEVELAND, OHIO – Xavier women's tennis rising sophomore Anna Roggenburk picked the Singles A-Flight title at the 2020 Oracle ITA Summer Circuit event held at the Cleveland Racquet Club.
Roggenburk was set to play Cleveland State's Bethany Yauch in the opening round before Yauch withdrew. In the quarterfinals, Roggenburk faced Victoria Vasquez of Kenyon College, winning 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals.
In the semis, Roggenburk faced incoming Xavier freshman Blessing Nwaozuzu, who had topped Katie Beavin (6-4, 7-6, 1-0) and Olivia Rondini of Bryant University (6-7, 6-2, 1-0) to reach that point.
The two Musketeers split the first two sets, with Nwaozuzu taking the first, 6-2, and Roggenburk taking the second 6-1. Roggenburk advanced to the final with a third set win.
In the finals match, Roggenburk took on Madeline Lynch from Wake Forest, winning 6-0, 6-2 to secure the A-Flight bracket win.
Roggenburk was in the midst of a strong freshman campaign when the season was cut short, primarily playing in the No. 2 singles and double spots for the Musketeers. Roggenburk collected 14 total wins during dual play last spring, including a team-high nine doubles wins, primarily partnered with Rachael Reichenbach. The native of Avon Lake, Ohio also picked up a BIG EAST Athlete of the Week award during the shortened 2020 season.
