Volleyball Drops Five-Set Match to Marshall in Home Opener

MaryAnn O'Toole posted a career-high 19 kills and 23 digs on Sunday
CINCINNATI - Xavier volleyball dropped a five-set match (25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 12-15) to Marshall on Sunday afternoon in the Musketeers home opener. Xavier moved to 1-1 on the year, while Marshall improved 1-0.

SET ONE
• Xavier scored six straight points to open the first set and never trailed in the frame, posting a 25-14 victory. MaryAnn O'Toole had five kills and five digs in the set, while Carrigan O'Reilly had 13 assists.
SET TWO
• The second frame had four ties and three lead changes with neither team leading by more than four points. Tied at 22, the Thundering Herd outscored Xavier, 3-2, down the stretch to pull away for the 25-23 victory. MaryAnn O'Toole had six kills and Alyssa Overbeck had 10 digs in the set.
SET THREE
• Xavier never trailed in the set and led by as many as six points twice. Xavier scored five of the final seven points in the frame, capped by a Carrigan O'Reilly kill to seal the 25-19 victory. Seven different Musketeers recorded a kill in the set, paced by MaryAnn O'Toole and Lauren Hanlon who both had four kills.
SET FOUR
• Marshall never trailed in the set and led by as many as eight points (17-9) before the Musketeers used a 12-6 run to close within two points (23-21). Marshall pulled away with a kill and a Xavier attack error, posting a 25-21 set three win.
SET FIVE
• Marshall never trailed in the set and led by as many as five points (11-6). Xavier battled back with a 5-1 run, closing within one point (12-11). Marshall scored three of the final four points to post their first win of the season.Â

• MaryAnn O'Toole posted her second straight double-double and the fifth of her career. The outside hitter posted a career-high 19 kills and a career-high 23 digs. The 19 kills were also a match high vs the Thundering Herd.
• Carrigan O'Reilly posted a match-high 57 assists to go along with eight digs and four blocks. Alyssa Overbeck chipped in 32 digs, while Stevie Wolf had 24 digs.
• Freshman Delaney Hogan recorded 11 kills, three blocks and two assists. Lauren Hanlon added nine kills, while Ellie Chaffee added eight.Â
• Xavier posted three more total team blocks (10-7) than Marshall. The Thundering Herd posted two more aces (4-2).

• Xavier returns to action on Friday, Feb. 5 vs Cincinnati. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. from Cintas Center.
