Ellie Chaffee posted a match-high 13 kills, six blocks and .565 hitting percentage

CINCINNATI - Sophomore Ellie Chaffee posted a match-high 13 kills, .565 hitting percentage and six blocks in Friday's four-set loss (26-24, 21-25, 19-25, 21-25) to Cincinnati at Cintas Center.

Xavier dropped to 1-2 on the year, while the Bearcats improved to 2-1.

THE MATCH

SET ONE
• The opening set had 14 ties and 10 lead changes with neither team leading by more than three points. Tied at 24, Xavier took advantage of a UC attacking error followed by an Ellie Chaffee ace to capture the set, 26-24. Chaffee, Kelly Franxman and MaryAnn O'Toole all posted four kills in the frame.

SET TWO
• Cincinnati never trailed in the second set and led by four points late in the frame, 22-18. Xavier scored two straight points to close within two (22-20) before the Bearcats pulled away and sealed the set with an ace - winning the frame, 25-21.

SET THREE
• Xavier took an early 3-0 lead before the Bearcats went on a 14-4 run to take their largest lead of the set, 14-7. The Musketeers closed within three points (20-17) down the stretch before the Bearcats closed the stanza on a 5-2 run, taking a 25-19 victory.

SET FOUR
• The final set had three ties and one lead change. Cincinnati led by as many as six points (18-12) before Xavier used a 9-5 run to close within two points late in the set (23-21). The Bearcats clinched the match on back-to-back Xavier errors in the set, winning 25-21.

NOTABLES

• Ellie Chaffee posted a match-high 13 kills, six blocks and .565 hitting percentage. The 13 kills also matched her career high (13 at Seton Hall on Nov. 9, 2019).

• Kelly Franxman recorded a season-high 12 kills to go along with 10 digs, the first double-double of her career.

• MaryAnn O'Toole added six kills and 18 digs, while Delaney Hogan chipped in six kills and three blocks.

• Carrigan O'Reilly posted a team-high 44 assists to go along with seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Alyssa Overbeck added a team-high 22 digs.

• Xavier had five more total team blocks (9-4) than the Bearcats. Cincinnati posted a 13-5 advantage in aces.

UP NEXT

• Xavier returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Cincinnati. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. from Fifth Third Arena.
