Maddie Thiss scores golden goal in 106 minute

CHICAGO - Xavier women's soccer used a golden goal from Maddie Thiss to pick up an overtime win at DePaul, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. Xavier moves to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in BIG EAST play.

Rachel Butler scored in the first half and Molly McLaughlin added a tally in the second half to give Xavier a 2-0 lead going into the final 10 minutes of regulation. DePaul answered with goals in the 83rd minute, as well as in the final 90 seconds of regulation to for overtime. In the second overtime period, Maddie Thiss scored off a corner kick from Carrie Lewis to secure the win for the Musketeers.

Xavier returns to action next Saturday, hosting Butler on Saturday, April 3. Xavier hosts the Bulldogs at 1:00 p.m. at XU Soccer Complex as part of a doubleheader with the Xavier and Butler men.

37' | XAVIER | Hayley Jakovich served the ball into the box on a free kick on the left side of the field to Molly McLaughlin, whose header was saved, but Rachel Butler found the rebound near the left post and used a header to sneak it inside the left post for the 1-0 lead.

68' | XAVIER | Hayley Jakovich served the ball into the box on a free kick on the right side, finding Molly McLaughlin in front of the net who finished with a header for the 2-0 lead

83' | DEPAUL | DU's Grace Phillpotts served the ball to Morgan Turner who shot to the upper left of the goal to cut Xavier's lead to 2-1.

89' | DEPAUL | In the final minute, DePaul's Bina Saipi scored to tie the game 2-2 and eventually send it to overtime.

106' | XAVIER | In the second overtime, Carrie Lewis served the ball into the box on a corner kick from the right side. The ball got bounced around in front of the net until Maddie Thiss found it in front of the left side of the net, shooting to the left side for the game-winner, 3-2.

NOTABLE

Maddie Thiss' goal was her first of the season and second as a Musketeer, bringing her season total to three points. Thiss' goal was her first game-winner at Xavier. She finished with two shots, both on-frame.
Rachel Butler's first half goal was her first of the season and third as a Musketeer.
Molly McLaughlin's second half goal was her second of the season, bringing her to a team-high four points. McLaughlin led the Musketeers with eight shots, including five on frame.
Hayley Jakovich picked up an assist on McLaughlin's goal, her first of the season.
Xavier held a 14-9 advantage overall on shots, a 9-5 advantage on shots on goal, and a 4-3 advantage on corners.
Olivia Jenkins played the full time in-goal, picking up her third win of the season, collecting two saves with two goals against.
Jakovich and Grace Brauer played the full 106 minutes on Xavier's backline. Allie Anderson also played over 100 minutes for the Musketeers.
Xavier extends its unbeaten streak against DePaul to five matches, dating back to 2017.
