
Musketeers Split Saturday Doubleheader with Butler

Series finale pushed back to a 1 PM start on Sunday
CINCINNATIÂ -Â Xavier baseball split a Saturday doubleheader with Butler, picking up the 7-2 win in game one and falling, 7-3, in game two, to take a 2-1 lead in the series into the series finale on Sunday.Â
Butler jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring a pair in the top of the first, but Xavier responded with three-run third and played add-on in the fourth and fifth to take the 7-2 win. Lane Flamm picked up the win in game one, going 5.1 innings in the 7.0 inning game, allowing just two runs and striking out a career-high nine along the way. Alex Helmin's three RBI led the Musketeers at the plate, as he and Garrett Schultz each had a pair of hits in the first game of the day.Â
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings of game two before a Bulldog grand slam put Butler ahead for good. The Musketeers scored a run in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings, but three runs for Butler in the final three innings put the game out of reach for Xavier. Ethan Bosacker made the start in game two, going 5.0 innings in the nine-inning game, with the only runs allowed coming on the third inning grand slam. Garrett Schultz had two more hits in game two, including his second homer of the season.
Three games into Xavier's eight-game Pledge It campaign to support Vs. Cancer, the Musketeers have collected 25 hits have while Xavier pitchers have 27 strikeouts.
Xavier moved to 13-15 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play while Butler moved to 7-14 overall and 2-5 in BIG EAST play. The series will wrap up with game four on Sunday, set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch, moved back from the original start time of noon.

3RD INNING | Kody Darcy hit a one out single, Ryan Altenberger followed that with a double and Natale Monastra walked to load the bases. With two outs, Alex Helmin doubled to left field to bring in three runs, putting Xavier ahead, 3-2.
4TH INNING | With one out, Grant Stephenson doubled down the left field line and Andrew Walker walked, then both advanced on a sac bunt from Kody Darcy. Ryan Altenberger was intentionally walked to load the base, then Natale Monastra walked to bring in Stephenson, 4-2 Xavier.
5TH INNING | Alex Helmin and Garrett Schultz singled to give Xavier two on with no outs. Grant Stephenson bunted, reaching on an error and advancing to third, with Helmin and Schultz both coming home, Xavier 7-2.
