Women's Tennis Advances to the BIG EAST Championship Match with 4-1 Win Over St. John's

CAYCE, S.C. - After an extended weather delay, Xavier women's tennis topped St. John's, 4-1, in the BIG EAST Semifinals in Cayce, S.C. to advance to the conference championship match.
The match began Saturday morning, with the Musketeers picking up the doubles point and moving into the first set of singles play before weather forced play to halt, with the match eventually resuming Sunday morning. Xavier picked up three of the first four decisions in singles to take the win.
The Musketeers will now face DePaul on Monday at 9:00 a.m. for the BIG EAST Championship, after the Blue Demons topped Villanova, 4-1, in the semifinals. The Musketeers took the 4-3 win against the Blue Demons in Cincinnati on April 9.
This is Xavier's fourth appearance in the BIG EAST Championship match since joining the conference in the 2013-14 season.
Xavier took the doubles point after Kat Lyman and Kaitlin Ruether took the first decision, 6-0, on the No. 3 court. St. John's took the decision on the No. 1 court, 6-2, against Emily Thomas and Ahmeir Kyle but Imani Graham and Anna Roggenburk to a 6-4 decision on the No. 2 court to secure the point.
After play was halted midway through the first set on singles action, the Musketeers picked up the first two singles decisions, with Anna Roggenburk taking a 6-2, 6-0 win on the No. 2 court, her 14th singles win of the season against Najah Dawson to put Xavier ahead 2-0. Kaitlin Ruether's 6-2, 6-1 win on the No. 4 court made it a 3-0 Xavier advantage.
St. John's picked up a point on the No. 1 court, 6-3, 6-4, against Kat Lyman to cut Xavier's lead to 3-1, but Imani Graham battled back after falling in set one to take a 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 win on the No. 3 court, her 15th singles win of her freshman season, to seal the 4-1 win for the Musketeers.
In the No. 5 spot, Emily Thomas led 7-6, 3-5 when the match was decided. Lucy Octave was leading in the third set after taking set one, 6-2, 1-6, 3-2, when the match was decided.
