Baseball Falls to UConn in BIG EAST Tournament First Round

CINCINNATI - Xavier baseball fell to top-seeded UConn in the Musketeers' opening game of the 2021 BIG EAST Baseball Championship, presented by JEEP. Xavier fell, 11-1, to the Huskies to move to 25-25 on the season, and will now face the No. 3 Seton Hall at 2:30 p.m. at Prasco Park.

The Huskies scored in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead before back-to-back doubles from Natale Monastra and Jared Cushing brought in a run for the Musketeers to cut it to 5-1. The Huskies added runs in each of the next three innings to take an 11-1 lead into the seventh inning. Both teams were scoreless the rest of the way

The Musketeers will face a 23-24 Pirates team that fell on a walk-off against No. 2 seed Creighton, 8-7, in the opening game of the tournament.

SCORING RECAP

4TH INNING | With two outs, Natale Monastra hit a double of the right field wall and Jared Cushing followed with a double to left field to bring in Monastra, cutting UConn's lead to 5-1.

XU AT THE PLATE

Jared Cushing (1-4) picked up the RBI for the Musketeers with a double in the fourth inning, extending his hit streak to eight games.
Natale Monastra went 2-4 with a double, coming around to score the Musketeers' lone run in the fourth inning.
Andrew Walker went 2-4 at the plate.
Luke Franzoni and Jack Housinger each had a hit to extend both of their on-base streaks to 12 games.
Alex Helmin, Tyler DeMartino and Andrew Sexton each had a hit as well.

XU ON THE MOUND

Nick Zwack went 3.0 innings in the start, allowing five earned runs on six hits. Zwack struck out two with three walks.
Dorsey Chatham entered in the fourth, going 1.1 innings, finishing with four runs allowed, two earned, on two hits and two walks.
Griffin Lanoue entered for the final two outs of the fifth, going 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Xander Rojahn entered for the for the final out of the sixth, going 0.2 innings with out allowing a run or a hit, striking out one and walking three.
Luke Bell entered for the final two outs of the seventh, closing out the game without allowing a run or a hit. Bell walked one, and struck out four, a career-high, including all three batters he faced in the eighth.
