CINCINNATI - Xavier head women's basketball coach Melanie Moore has announced the promotion of Molly Bateman to assistant coach. She previously served as the program's assistant athletic director for women's basketball since August of 2020.
"This is an exciting day for our program!" said Moore. "Molly has made an impact on our program in so many areas and earned this promotion. She is very knowledgeable about X's and O's, works extremely hard, great at developing players on and off the court, and brings energy to Cintas Center every day! She is a shining star in our profession! We are thrilled for Molly to get back on the court!"
During her time as assistant athletic director for basketball, Bateman oversaw the day-to-day operations of the program. She handled team travel, equipment and gear orders and managed the program's daily schedules.
"I am honored to be named an assistant coach for the Xavier Women's Basketball program," said Bateman. "I truly believe in Coach Mel's vision for our program and I am excited to be part of that vision. Being at Xavier for a year now, I know how special this place is, and I am thrilled to be an assistant coach under Coach Mel. It is great to be back in my home state of Ohio at this prestigious University and historic women's basketball program. I look forward to assisting Coach Mel and the rest of the staff and working with the team!"
Prior to Xavier, she was an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy for five seasons (2015-20), spending the last two seasons as the team's recruiting coordinator.
In March of 2019, Bateman was recognized as one of the top-30 up-and-coming women's basketball coaches nationally with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Thirty Under 30.
At Detroit, she helped coach Sylare Starks to Horizon League All-Freshman Team honors - becoming only the third player to earn the honors - after leading the conference's freshmen in scoring (10.1 ppg) in 2019-20. Starks also ranked seventh in the conference in three-pointers made (50), the third most in program history by a freshman.
Bateman also coached Zoey Oatis for four seasons at Detroit. Oatis led the Titans in steals in her final three seasons, finishing her career with 120 steals.
She also coached Anja Marinkovic to Horizon League All-Freshman Team honors in 2016-17. The guard made over 100 three pointers in her first two seasons with the program.
Bateman also helped coach Nicole Urbanick who finished the 2015-16 season with 2.77 three-pointers made per game, ranking first in the Horizon League and 19th in the NCAA. The guard posted 83 three pointers in 2015-16.
Bateman helped coach Nicole Urbanick, Haleigh Ristovski and Rosanna Reynolds who all surpassed 100 3-pointers for their careers.
The Titans, who primarily played the 2015-16 campaign with eight players, broke the school record for three-pointers made in a season (234) and set a new program mark in free-throw percentage (.738). Detroit Mercy also led the Horizon League (conference only games) in field-goal percentage and three-point field-goal percentage. The Titans then broke the mark for three-pointers made in a season (259) again the following year in 2016-17.
