Marco Pennelli Wins Singles Draw at River Forest Invite

Musketeers win over 20 matches through two-day event
RIVER FOREST, Ill. - Xavier men's tennis opened the fall tournament season with a strong showing at the River Forest Collegiate Invite. Freshman Marco Pennelli took home his flight title in singles action, one of three Musketeers to compete in their flight's championship match. Xavier combined for a total of 22 wins over the weekend, taking home 14 singles match victories and eight wins in doubles action.
Pennelli opened up his college career with three wins playing in the No. 5 singles draw. Pennelli picked up wins over Arvid Hjalte (ISU) Victor Spolidorio (NIU) and Henri Ohl (WU) on the way to winning the flight.
Charlie Temming advanced to the Championship match in the No. 3 singles flight with wins over Pau Riere of EIU and Oscar Alvarez of SLU, before falling in the final match.
Cambell Nakayama also advanced to the Championship match, in the No. 4 singles draw, picking up wins against Tyler Carlin of EIU and Dominick Cucharn of ISU on the way.
Shashank Reddy took third place in the No. 6 singles flight, picking up an opening round win over Ruslan Pultz of EIU, and then taking a win over John Fakour of WU in the third-place match.
Brett Winters, competing in the No. 1 singles draw, picked up a win in his opening match against Nam Pham of ISU, but then fell in the second round and in the third-place match.
Ryan Cahill competed in the No. 2 singles draw, also picking up the win in the first round against David Alvarez of YSU, but fell in the second round and third-place match.
In doubles action, Aaron Thompson and Jake Zipoli went 3-0 in the round-robin No. 4 draw, picking up wins over UIC, ISU and NIU.
