Musketeers fall 4-3 after coming back to tie match at 3-3-; Xavier heads to Bellarmine for first of two matches next weekend

DAYTON, Ohio - After falling behind 3-1, Xavier men's tennis battled back to tie the match 3-3, taking the deciding singles match to a third set, but fell, 4-3, to Dayton on Friday evening.

Xavier is back in action on Friday, January 28, traveling to Louisville to face Bellarmine at 3:00 p.m. Xavier will return home to host Cleveland State at Eastern Hills on Saturday, January 29 at 4:30 p.m.

THE MATCH

The two teams split the first two doubles decisions, with Xavier winning 6-3 on court No. 1 with Diego Nava and Ryan Cahill, and Dayton taking No. 3, 6-2, over Charlie Temming and Shashank Reddy. The Flyers took the doubles point on a 6-3 decision on the No. 2 court against Brett Winters and Cambell Nakayama.

The Flyers went ahead 2-0 with a win on the No. 4 court, 6-3, 6-1, against Charlie Temming, before the Musketeers picked up a point on the No. 3 court for Ryan Cahill, 6-3, 6-4, to make it 2-1.

UD pushed it back to a 3-1 advantage with a 7-6, 6-1 win on the No. 6 court, 7-6, 6-1, against Marco Pennelli.

The Musketeers picked up three set wins on courts No. 1 and No. 2 to pull even with the Flyers. Diego Nava moved to 2-0 on the year in the No. 1 spot with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win, and Brett Winters picked up a 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 win on No. 2.

The deciding point came on court No. 5 where Cambell Nakayama battled through three sets but fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to set the final score at 4-3 in favor of the Flyers.
