Scarlett, Musketeers Upend Titans in Home Opener

Mackayla Scarlett matched her career-high in scoring with 19 points
CINCINNATI - Mackayla Scarlett matched her career high in scoring on Thursday night with 19 points, leading the Musketeers to a 71-57 win over Detroit Mercy at Cintas Center.
Xavier moves to 2-0 on the year, while the Titans drop to 0-2. The Musketeers have back-to-back wins to open the season for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
The Titans led by six points (22-16) after the opening quarter before the Musketeers hit 58.8 percent (10-for-17) of their shot attempts in the second frame, outscoring Detroit Mercy, 26-8. The Musketeers ended the first half on a 13-0 run and held the Titans without a basket for the final 3:29 of the half.
The Titans closed within seven points three times in the third quarter before Xavier closed the frame on a 6-0 run, regaining a double-figure lead they would never relinquish. The Musketeers led by as many as 16 points twice in the final quarter before pulling away for the 71-57 victory.

• Courtney Prenger added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Aanaya Harris and Megan Harkey both chipped in eight points, while Taylor Smith finished with seven.
• Fernanda Ovalle added six points and a team-high five rebounds. The freshman guard chipped in three assists, two blocks and one steal.
• Xavier had 10 blocks and 10 steals in the game. The 10 steals are the most in a game since Feb. 11, 2022 at Creighton (13 steals). The 10 blocks are the most in a game since Dec. 8, 2021 vs Niagara (12 blocks).
• Xavier forced 18 turnovers, converting the miscues into 25 points. The Musketeers also scored 13 fastbreak points.
• The Musketeers hit 42.4 percent of their shot attempts (28-for-66) and went 13-for-19 from the foul line. Defensively, Xavier limited the Titans to a .356 field-goal percentage.
• The Musketeers play the first of five straight home games on Thursday, Nov. 10 vs Detriot Mercy. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
