Mackayla Scarlett scored a career-high 18 points on Sunday vs the Friars
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Mackayla Scarlett scored a career-high 18 points on Sunday afternoon, leading the Musketeers to a 62-60 BIG EAST road win at Providence.
Xavier improved to 8-16 (3-12 BIG EAST), while the Friars dropped to 10-14 (5-10 BIG EAST).
The Musketeers moved to 11-7 in the all-time series with a 4-4 mark in road games vs the Friars. The win snapped a three-game road losing streak in the series for the Musketeers (last win at PC was on Dec. 28, 2016).
• Xavier led 6-4 with 5:06 left in the opening quarter before the Friars went on a 16-4 run on 6-for-7 shooting to close the quarter, taking a 10-point lead (20-10). Providence hit 61.5 percent (8-for-13) of its shot attempts in the opening frame, while the Musketeers were held to a .214 field-goal percentage (3-for-14).
• The Friars pushed their lead out to 13 points (27-14) with 6:25 left in the first half before the Musketeers went on a 15-5 run to close within three points (32-29) with 58 seconds on the clock. An Olivia Olsen free throw in the closing seconds of the half gave the Friars a 33-29 lead at the break.
• Mackayla Scarlett led Xavier with nine points, while Aanaya Harris added five points. Shelby Calhoun led the team on the glass with four rebounds.
• Providence pulled down one more rebound (16-15) than the Musketeers in the first half. Xavier forced 12 turnovers, converting the miscues into 13 points.
• Xavier was limited to 6-for-23 shooting, but knocked down 84.2 percent (16-for-19) of its free throws.
• Xavier opened the second half on a 4-0 run capped by an Ayanna Townsend jumper, tying the game at 33-33 with 8:50 left in the third quarter. Providence responded with a 4-0 run of its own to regain a lead it would not relinquish for the rest of the quarter. The Friars outscored Xavier, 13-11, in the third frame - taking a six-point lead (46-40) into the final quarter.
• The Musketeers opened the final quarter on a 9-2 run, regaining the lead (49-48) for the first time since the opening quarter. The remainder of the quarter have four ties and three lead changes.
• With the game tied 55-55, Mackayla Scarlett sank her third three pointer of the game to give Xavier the lead with 43 seconds left in regulation. Xavier sealed the win by going 4-for-4 from the foul line in the closing seconds. Shaila Beeler hit a pair of free throws with seven seconds left on the clock before a last-second layup by Providence's Audrey Koch made the final score, 62-60.
• Xavier hit 63.6 (7-for-11) if its shot attempts in the final quarter, outscoring the Friars, 22-14. The Musketeers were also a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final quarter.
• Mackayla Scarlett led four Musketeers in double figures with a career and game-high 18 points. Her previous career high was 17 points earlier this season vs the Friars. The guard added two assists, one steal and one rebound.
• Shelby Calhoun added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. She added two steals and one block.
• Aanaya Harris chipped in 12 points and five rebounds, while Ayanna Townsend posted 10 points, two steals and two rebounds. Courtney Prenger and Kaysia Woods each pulled down five rebounds in the win.
• Providence won the battle on the glass, 36-34. Xavier held a 16-9 advantage in points off of turnovers, while the Friars scored six more second-chance points (13-7).
• Xavier was limited to a .347 field-goal percentage (17-for-49), but knocked down 80.6 percent (25-for-31) of its free throw attempts.
• Xavier returns to action on Friday, Feb. 18 vs UConn. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center with the game being aired nationally on SNY.
