Men's Tennis Set to Host Youngstown State on Saturday; Friday's Ball State Match Canceled

Musketeers will host the Penguins on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Eastern Hills
CINCINNATI - Xavier men's tennis will host Youngstown State this weekend, facing the Penguins on Saturday, February 5 at 6:00 p.m. at Eastern Hills. Xavier's match against Ball State, scheduled for Friday, February 4 at 1:30 p.m., has been canceled. A make-up date will be announced later, if possible.

- The Penguins are 0-2 on the season, falling to Delaware, 5-2, and Navy, 4-3, last weekend. They're scheduled to face Dayton on Friday.
- YSU went 12-9 overall and 5-3 in Horizon League play last season
- Youngstown State fell, 4-2, to NKU in the Horizon league tournament to end 2022 spring schedule
- YSU took the 5-2 win in last season's match-up, taking the doubles point before Brett Winters took the win in the No. 1 singles spot.

- Diego Nava was honored by the conference for his 4-0 singles record to start to the dual season, picking up the first BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honor from the conference office on Wednesday.
- Nava, a graduate student from Woodland Hills, Calif., helped Xavier go 2-0 last weekend with a pair of wins in the No. 1 spot. Nava topped Bellarmine's Cole Groetsch in two sets, 6-2, 7-6 as the Musketeers picked up the 6-1 win and then took a three-set win, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 against Cleveland State's No. 1 Maxime Mareschal-Hay to help Xavier to the 6-1 win.
- The wins moved Nava to 4-0 on the season, after he picked up a 7-5, 6-4 win against Ohio State's No. 1 Cannon Kinglsey, in the season opener. The win against Kingsley, who was rated in the ITA's Top 25 singles players, is the highest ranked win in Xavier's program history. Nava also picked up a win over Dayton's Connor Bruce, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 during Xavier's opening weekend.

- The Musketeers opened up the home schedule with a 6-1 win over Cleveland State on Saturday, capping off a 2-0 weekend and moving to 2-2 on the season.
- Xavier took the doubles point after Charlie Temming and Shashank Reddy took the No. 3 spot, 6-3, and Diego Nava and Ryan Cahill took the No. 1 spot, 6-4. Brett Winters and Cambell Nakayama were leading 5-4 in the No. 2 spot when the point was decided.
- Xavier picked up two-set wins on three singles courts. Marco Pennellli took a 6-0, 6-0 win on the No. 5 court, Ryan Cahill took the No. 2 court, 6-2, 6-2, and Charlie Temming won on No. 4, 6-4, 6-3.
- CSU picked up a two-set win, 7-5, 6-3, on the No. 3 court against Brett Winters.
- On the No. 1 court, Diego Nava took a 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2 win. Caden Kammerer battled to a 6-7(4), 6-2, 15-13 win on the No. 6 court to set the score at 6-1 in favor of the Musketeers.

- The Musketeers returned eight letter-winners from last season, including Brett Winters, who competed primarily in Xavier's No. 1 singles spot, as well as regular singles players Cambell Nakayama, Shashank Reddy and Aaron Thompson. Dominic Macaluso, Pascal Mosberger and Jake Zipoli also return for Xavier.
- Xavier added five newcomers, including a three-person freshman class, Ryan Cahill, Marco Pennelli and Charlie Temming.
- The Musketeers newcomers also included a pair of transfers, Nick Loudermilk from College of Charleston and Diego Nava from Loyola Marymount.
