Xavier Uses Four-Run Eighth to Win Fifth Straight
03.11.22 | Baseball
Housinger and Cushing combine for Seven RBIs
Just two batters in to the game, Jack Housinger launched one to right field, and gave the Musketeers an early 2-0 lead. The Chanticleers didn't get the bat to the ball often, but capitalized when they could with single runs in the first, second, fourth, and fifth while Xavier was quiet at the plate.
Faced with a 4-2 deficit, Andrew Walker got one back in the top of the sixth by pulling one over the right field wall, and then Xavier took the lead back in the 7th behind a Jared Cushing double and a Jack Housinger Sac Fly.  Coastal Carolina didn't go away quietly as they homered after the seventh inning stretch, but that was all they would get.
A four-run eighth highlighted by a Matthew DePrey ball in play, a Cushing single and a Housinger double put Xavier up 9-5; a score that would hold behind the arms of pitchers Jack Lynch and Lane Flamm.
The Musketeers and Chanticleers are scheduled for a Double Header tomorrow starting at 1:00 pm ET, weather permitting.

 XU AT THE PLATE |
- Four Musketeers had multi-hit games today, and seven different players scored.
- Jack Housinger led the offense with a 2-4 day including a first-inning two-run homer and four RBIs
- Jared Cushing bat at the bottom of the order, but came up big with two hits and three RBIs including a double and two runs scored.
- Andrew Walker was 2-5 with a home run to spark a rally mid game, and he also scored twice today.
- Matthew DePrey wasn't credited with an RBI on his bunt attempt in the eighth, but the perfect placement forced the errant throw to score the Musketeers go-ahead run. He later crossed the plate in the important four-run inning.
- Jerry Huntzinger went 2-4 with a run, and Garrett Schultz and Alex Helmin also crossed the plate in the win.

 XU ON THE MOUND |
- Trevor Olson drew the start in Game One, and he went four innings while striking out a pair and allowing two earned runs.
- Jared Gadd was first out of the pun, and he pitched two strong innings and struck out three. The only blip was a solo home run.
- Jonathan Kelly went 1.2 innings, and only allowed one earn run as the game went on, keeping the Musketeers in striking distance.
- Jack Lynch shut down the Chanticleers and pitching a clean inning and picking up two strikeouts.
- With just one out to get and Coastal Carolina threatening, Lane Flamm induced a groundball to get the final out and secure the save.Â
