Xavier Opens Home Slate with Win
03.23.22 | Baseball
CINCINNATI, OH -Â Xavier's first game batting second this season went pretty well, as the Musketeers leave Hayden Field with an 8-2 victory over Michigan. In the debut of a newly-turfed Hayden Field, a brief rain shower did little to slow down the Xavier offense.Â
It was a seesaw start to the game as both the Wolverines and Musketeers got on the board in the first (Tyler DeMartino drove in Xavier's run). Xavier took the lead as Jerry Huntzinger roped a 3-0 pitch into right to score Jared Cushing, but Michigan came back to tie it in the top of the third.
Michigan would be held scoreless from that point on behind the arms of Luke Bell, Jack Lynch, and Bryce Barnett. Meanwhile, the Musketeers took the lead in the bottom of the third with RBI doubles from Andrew Walker and DeMartino. Xavier blew the game open in the fourth with four runs, two coming on an Andrew Walker home run. The 8-2 score held for the remainder of the game.
On deck, Xavier has a four-game set with crosstown rivals Cincinnati starting at UC on Friday at 4:00 pm ET.
