SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A big first inning for USC Upstate proved to be the deciding factor as Xavier opened up its road trip to South Carolina with a 7-6 loss to the Spartans on Friday afternoon.
The Spartans scored six in the bottom of the first and took the lead into the third inning when Jerry Huntzinger got the Musketeers on the board with an RBI double, then came home on a Luke Franzoni home run in an inning which cut the Spartan's lead in half, 6-3.
Xavier cut it to 6-4 in the fifth when Franzoni launched a second long ball to left field, but Upstate would get the run back in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-4 lead, which held into the seventh.
In the top of the seventh, Jerry Huntzinger picked up two more RBI with the Musketeers' third home run of the day, making it a one run game at 7-6. Xavier got the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth but were unable to bring them around, setting the final score at 7-6.
The Musketeers return to the Harley Park on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. for game two with the Spartans.
