Xavier Baseball Thumps South Carolina, Wins Third-Straight Game
03.08.22 | Baseball
All Nine Musketeers record an RBI in victory
Early action favored the Gamecocks as they struck first off starter Miles Halligan, but Xavier quickly countered with RBIs from Garrett Schultz and Alex Helmin. The lead wouldn't last long as South Carolina scored two more in the bottom half, and an additional in the third inning to go up 4-2.
This sparked 10 unanswered runs by the Musketeers. Stephenson, Helmin, and Cushing each got an RBI without an out, and Huntzinger, Franzoni, and Walker combined for four more RBIs after a fielders choice midway through the inning. Up 9-4, Tyler DeMartino scored on a passed ball and Jack Housinger hit a two RBI single. South Carolina tried to claw back with three runs in the eighth, but Luke Franzoni hit a two-run homer in the ninth followed by DeMartino becoming the final starter to record an rbi with a single to center. Xavier held firm as they combined the huge scoring run and Jack Lynch's 3.1 perfect innings to score the 15-7 win.
The Musketeers are back tomorrow night as they take on the Winthrop Eagles at 6:00 pm ET.

XU ON THE MOUND |
- Miles Halligan drew the midweek start, getting two strikeouts in 1.0 innings pitched. He gave up three runs but left with the Musketeers only down a run.
- Bobby Jones came in in the second and went deep with 2.2 innings pitched, and only allowing one earned run on three hits.
- The star on the mound was Jack Lynch, who, while Xavier was scoring at will, put down 10-straight Gamecock batters including three strikeouts in his 3.1 inning outing.
- Luke Bell struggled a bit in the eighth, but with the game well out of reach for South Carolina, he did well to push the game forward and earned a strikeout.
- Jonathan Kelly pitched the ninth, striking out two without allowing a hit in the frame.
