Musketeers return to BIG EAST action this weekend at Georgetown

RICHMOND, Ky. - Xavier baseball fell in extra innings at Eastern Kentucky, with the Colonels scoring the run with two outs in the bottom of the 11th to top the Musketeers 3-2 on Tuesday evening.

EKU took the early lead after manufacturing an unearned run in the first, but Xavier pulled even in the third, with Jeff Holtz leading off the inning with a double, moving to third on a ground ball and coming home on a single from Jack Housinger to tie the game 1-1.

Xavier's pitchers didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning, when back-to-back hits to lead off the inning helped the Colonels move back in front 2-1.

The Colonel lead held until the seventh inning when Garrett Schultz got aboard with a walk, moved to third on a Matthew DePrey single and then scored on a sac fly from Jared Cushing to tie the game at 2-2, which held through the ninth inning to force extra frames.

After a scoreless 10th, EKU moved the runner placed on second to start the inning over to third, and then scored the winning run on wild pitch to take the walk-off 3-2 win. The 11-inning outing was the Musketeers' second extra inning game of the season and the longest since playing 12 against UConn in 2021.

Next, Xavier heads out on the road for a three-game BIG EAST series at Georgetown, starting on Friday at 6:00 p.m.

XU AT THE PLATE

Jack Housinger finished with a hit (1-4) to extend his team-best hitting stream to 12 and on-base streak to 18. Housinger also drove in an RBI.
Matthew DePrey finished 1-3 with a walk, extending his streak of reaching safely to 10 games.
Jeff Holtz went 1-2 at the plate, coming around to score a run.
Luke Franzoni and Garrett Schultz each had two walks as the Musketeers finished with five total.

XU ON THE MOUND

Connor Bailey made the start, his third of the season, going 1.1 innings with just one run allowed, unearned on three walks with no hits allowed. Bailey recorded a strikeout.
Bryce Barnett entered for the final two outs of the second, going 1.2 innings without allowing a hit or a walk, striking out four.
Xander Rojahn pitched the fourth inning, walking a pair before getting out of the inning without allowing a hit or a run.
Jared Gadd entered in the fifth inning, allowing one run in 1.0 inning of work with three hits allowed and three strikeouts.
Trevor Olson came out for the sixth inning, going 1.2 innings with out allowing a run or a hit, walking one and striking out four.
Jack Lynch entered for the final out of the seventh and went 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out four.
Jerry Huntzinger entered in the 10th inning, and went the final 1.2 innings, striking out three and walking one, and allowing one run.
Xavier's pitchers combined to allow just four hits, matching a season-low set in the 2-1 loss to Wright State on March 16.
