Seven-Run Inning Powers Baseball Past Georgetown in Series Finale

The Hoyas took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Xavier cut the lead in half in the next half inning. Tyler DeMartino led off the inning, getting aboard after being hit by a pitch, and Andrew Walker reached on an error to put two on for Garrett Schultz. Schultz hit an RBI single to right to drive in DeMartino and cut the lead to 2-1.
The Hoyas responded immediately with a two-run bottom of the frame, taking the 4-1 lead into fifth, and runs in the fifth and the sixth pushed the Georgetown lead to 6-1 going in to the seventh inning
The Musketeers got the bats going in the top of the frame, with Garrett Schultz leading off the inning with a single, and Jared Cushing following that with a homer to left field to cut the Georgetown lead to three, 6-3. Matthew DePrey followed that with a single, then came home on a Lane Flamm home run, a two-run shot to right, pulling the Musketeers within one, 6-5.
The next two Xavier batters, Jerry Huntzinger and Jack Housinger, were hit by pitches and both moved into a scoring position on a wild pitch. Luke Franzoni singled through the right side to bring both home, putting the Musketeers in front, 7-6.
With one out in the inning, Andrew Walker was hit by a pitch, and Garrett Schultz hit his second single of the inning to load the bases for Jared Cushing, who hit a sac fly to drive in his third RBI of the inning, wrapping up the scoring for a six-hit, seven run inning that put the Musketeers in front 8-6.
The Hoyas got a run across in the ninth but were unable to score the tying run, with Jerry Huntzinger picking up the save on the way to a the final score of 8-7, Xavier.
The Musketeers head to Knoxville, Tenn., to face the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers on Tuesday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m.

- Luke Bell made the start, going 1.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits and a pair of walks.
- Jack Lynch entered for the final out of the second, going 3.0 innings, allowing just on run on five hits with four strikeouts.
- Jared Gadd entered for the final out of the fifth inning, going 2.1 innings, allowing one run on a pair of hits and a pair of walks, striking out four along the way. Gadd picked up the win to move to 3-2 on the season.
- Jerry Huntzinger pitched the final two innings, allowing just one run and two hits in 2.0 innings of work, striking out three to pick up his six save of the season.
