Jack Housinger has three-RBI performance

CINCINNATI, OH - Xavier baseball came home and played a gritty game against conference-leading Creighton. There was three ties and two lead changes throughout the contest, but ultimately the Blue Jays win 8-7.

Creighton started the game by bringing eight batters to the plate, but only scored twice on one base hit, a solo home run on the game's second pitch. The Musketeers were undeterred, coming right at the BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year with two runs on four hits. Jack Housinger hit a solo homer, and Andrew Walker capped the rally with an RBI single to tie the game.

Lane Flamm gave Xavier the lead in the second with an opposite-field blast just over the left field wall, and the lead held until Creighton hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Once again, Xavier immediately answered with a run in the bottom half to tie things at four.

Creighton took the lead for the third time in the seventh, but Xavier tied it again after the stretch with another Jack Housinger RBI. With two outs in the eighth, Creighton took the lead for good with a three-run homer. It wasn't easy though, as Xavier rallied in the ninth by getting the winning run to the plate after Tyler DeMartino drove in two with a one-out double. He got to third with two outs, and Garrett Schultz gave it a ride, but the Blue Jay left fielder jumped into the wall to make the game-ending grab.

Game Two is tomorrow at 1:00 pm ET at Hayden Field.

XU AT THE PLATE

Jack Housinger was the big bat of the day, going 2-4 with three RBIs and two runs, including a solo homer in the first and reaching base four times total.
Tyler DeMartino went 2-4 with a big two-rbi double in the ninth to bring Xavier within a run of tying the game late.
Andrew Walker also had a multi-hit game, going 2-5 with a double and an RBI.
Jerry Huntzinger scored three times today, going 1-4 at the plate.
Lane Flamm was 1-4 with a home run to give Xavier the lead in the second.
Luke Franzoni scored while going 1-4 today.
Jared Cushing and Jeff Holtz also picked up base knocks.

XU ON THE MOUND

Luke Bell drew the start and pitched a full inning, allowing two runs on one hit but got a strikeout.
Bryce Barnett came in for the second and third, not allowing a run as Xavier took the lead on offense.
Jack Lynch struck out two in his 2.0 innings, but gave up a homer in the fifth.
Jared Gadd pitched well in a long 3.0 inning outing, but he was responsible for the three-inning home run with two outs in the eighth.
Justin Loer pitched a clean ninth inning, earning one strikeout.
