Xavier Clinches Spot in BIG EAST Tournament with Shutout of St. John's
05.19.22 | Baseball
Luke Bell and Jack Lynch combine to allow just four baserunners
CINCINNATI, OH - Dominant pitching from Luke Bell and Jack Lynch held St. John's scoreless and gave Xavier their first shutout victory of the season. It couldn't have come at a better time, as the win clinched a spot as the three seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament at Prasco Park next week.
The scoring started after back-to-back singles in the first inning put the pressure on St. John's starter Joe Joe Rodriguez. He turned to try and pick off Jerry Huntzinger at second, but with nobody covering the bag, the throw sailed into the outfield and Huntzinger came all the way around to score. The 1-0 lead was enough to settle in Luke Bell, who pitched the first four innings without allowing a run and just giving up two hits. He struck out six in his longest outing to date.
Xavier scored twice more in the fourth, first off an Andrew Walker RBI single, and again with a Grant Stephenson sacrifice fly. From there, Jack Lynch took the ball and pitched the final five innings without allowing a hit. One base on balls was the only blemish as he struck out four Johnnies en route to helping deliver the win for Xavier.
The Musketeers play St. John's tomorrow and Saturday at noon to finish the regular season.
