Musketeers face Hoyas at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio
MASON, Ohio -Â Xavier baseball threatened late, getting the go-ahead run in scoring position in the ninth inning, but fell 6-5 to Creighton in the Musketeers' opening game of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at Prasco Park. Xavier will now play Georgetown on Saturday morning in the double elimination format.
In a game that was delayed nearly 24 hours due to weather, Xavier took a 2-0 led in the third on Luke Franzoni's 25th home run of the season, a two-run shot to center field that brought in Jack Housinger who got aboard with a two-out walk.
The Musketeers held the lead into the bottom of the fourth where the Bluejays drove in a pair to tie it up, 2-2, which held into the sixth inning. In the top of that frame, Garrett Schultz lead off with a single through the left side, and then a Lane Flamm double down the right field line drove him in to give Xavier the 3-2 lead.
The Bluejays responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch to tie it up at 3-3, then scored three in the bottom of the seventh to give CU the 6-3 lead headed to the eighth.
Xavier cut the lead back to 6-4 in the eighth inning after Lane Flamm singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a Jerry Huntzinger single, then scored on a sac fly from Jack Housinger.
The Musketeers threatened in the ninth inning, with Andrew Walker and Garrett Schultz getting aboard to lead off the inning, then moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. A Grant Stephenson single drove in Walker to cut it to a 6-5 Creighton lead, and a Jerry Huntzinger single loaded the bases but Xavier couldn't get the tying run across to set the final score at 6-5.
The Musketeers now face No. 4 seed Georgetown on Saturday in an elimination game, set for a 10:30 a.m. start at Prasco Park. The Hoyas fell, 4-0, to the No. 1 seed UConn in the tournament's opening game on Thursday. Xavier took two of three on the road against the Hoyas during the regular season.
