
Musketeers Play Host to James Madison in Home Opener

CINCINNATI - Xavier women's basketball plays host to James Madison in the team's home opener on Saturday, Nov. 11. Tip-off is slate for 7 p.m. from Cintas Center.
Saturday's meeting will be the first in school history between the two programs.
Xavier has won nine of its last 10 home openers.

• The Dukes were picked to finish first in the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches' Poll and received nine, first-place votes. James Madison posted a 26-8 (13-5) last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Round (L, 80-66 at Ohio State).
• Peyton McDaniel (R-So., G) and Kseniia Kozlova (R-Jr., C) were both tabbed to the preseason all-conference second team. Kozlova is averaging 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game this season with a .688 field-goal percentage (11-for-16). McDaniel has added 6.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
• James Madison is 1-1 on the year with a win over Eastern Mennonite (Nov. 6) and a loss vs Toledo (Nov. 8).
• Xavier is coming off a 55-41 loss at Youngstown State to open the 2023-24 season.
• Nila Blackford paced the Musketeers with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. The senior forward added a team-high nine rebounds and four steals. She now has 55 career games with 10 or more points. She nearly missed her 24th career double-double.
• Youngstown State won the battle on the glass, 39-25, and scored 24 points off of 18 Xavier turnovers. The Penguins also held a 12-0 advantage in second-chance points and score five more fastbreak points (7-2). Xavier held a 10-8 advantage in steals.
• Daniela López added seven points on 3-for-4 shooting in her Xavier debut. The freshman added a steal in 20 minutes of action off the bench.
• Kaysia Woods added six points, while Tae'lor Purvis and Mackayla Scarlett chipped in four points. Purvis added four rebounds and four steals.
• The Musketeers open the regular season on the road for the fourth consecutive year, traveling to Youngstown State on Nov. 8. The Musketeers and Penguins are playing each other for the first time since 2004.
• Xavier's home opener is slated for Saturday, Nov. 11 vs James Madison. It marks the first meeting between the two programs. All told, the Musketeers will play five home games at Cintas Center during non-conference action. Xavier will play six games on the road, including a trip to the Arizona State Tournament on Dec. 1-2.
• The annual Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout is set for Sunday, Dec. 10 at Fifth Third Arena. Xavier won the meeting last season, 48-35, at Cintas Center on Dec. 9.
• Xavier will play teams from seven different leagues during non-conference action: Mid-American (3), Horizon (2), Sun Belt (2), American, Pac-12, Big 12 and Ohio Valley. The Musketeers non-conference opponents combined to post a 181-166 record last year with three postseason appearances.
• Xavier plays an 18-game BIG EAST schedule beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 20 vs DePaul. The Musketeers will only play UConn (Feb. 14) and Villanova (Dec. 30) once during the 2023-24 season.
• The 2024 BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on March 8-11. FOX Sports will air the quarterfinal, semifinal and championship games.
• Xavier will play three nationally televised games: Jan. 13 vs Seton Hall (FS1), Feb. 14 vs UConn (SNY) and Feb. 21 at Butler (FS2).
• The Musketeers have won 59 non-conference games over the last seven seasons with a 47-12 mark at Cintas Center.

She led the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament twice (2015-16, 2022-23), captured two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Regular-Season Championships (2013-14, 2022-23) and won two MAAC Tournament Championships (2015-16, 2022-23). The conference titles and NCAA Tournament appearances were program firsts.
• The two-time MAAC Coach of the Year led the Gaels to a 26-7 (18-2 MAAC) record in 2022-23 and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Three players earned All-MAAC honors, highlighted by Juana Camilion who was named the MAAC Player of the Year and MAAC Defensive Player of the Year.
• Xavier returns three of its top five scorers from a year ago in Mackayla Scarlett (10.9), Taylor Smith (7.5) and Nila Blackford (6.3). Blackford also led the team in rebounding (5.5).
• The Musketeers also return Shelby Calhoun. The guard led the team in total assists (67), while ranking second in rebounding (4.6) and eighth in scoring (4.2).
