Musketeers and Red Storm return to the field on Saturday at 3 PM

QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier baseball dropped the series opener, 8-6, against St. John's after a big seventh inning put the Red Storm ahead late on Friday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Musketeers move to 30-20 overall on the season and 11-5 in BIG EAST play.

Xavier took the 2-0 lead in the third after Teddy Deters led off the inning with a single, followed by a home run to right for Matthew DePrey.

St. John's scored three in the fourth to take the 3-2 lead into the seventh where Xavier scored three runs on two hits with four walks in the inning. Teddy Deters led off the inning with a single, and back-to-back walks from Grant Stephenson and Jack Housinger loaded the bases with no outs. Deters came in on a Matthew DePrey ground ball to tie it up, and Stephenson scored on a wild pitch to put Xavier in front 4-3. Andrew Walker, who got on with a walk, came in on a double from Matt McCormick to make it a 5-3 Xavier lead.

St. John's responded with a big frame in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs on four hits to lead 8-5 going in to the eighth.

Xavier cut it to 8-6 after Teddy Deters hit a double, advanced to third on an error and home on a ground ball from Grant Stephenson in the eighth, but the Musketeers were unable score for the remainder of the game, setting the final score at 8-6.

Game two with the Red Storm is set for a 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

ON THE MOUND

Ethan Bosacker went 6.0 innings in the start, allowing three runs on three hits. He finished with a season-high matching nine strikeouts while giving up just two walks.
Jonathan Kelly pitched the seventh, allowing five runs on four hits with a pair of walks.
Jack Niedringhaus entered in the eighth, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit in 1.0 inning.

AT THE PLATE

Matthew DePrey finished 2-5 with two RBIs after hitting a two-run homer in the third, his 12th home run of the season.
Teddy Deters had a career-high three hits (3-4) and scored three runs.
Matt McCormick went 2-5, driving in an RBI on a double in the seventh inning.
Grant Stephenson finished 1-3 with a walk, driving in an RBI and scoring a run.
Jack Housinger finished with three walks, and now has a career-high 49 for the season, fourth most in a single season in program record. He has 181 walks for his career, second most in program history.
