Musketeers and Red Storm set for noon start on Sunday for game three

QUEENS, N.Y. - Xavier baseball pulled even in the series with St. John's, taking game two, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Musketeers move to 31-20 overall on the season and 12-5 in BIG EAST play.

Xavier took the lead in the first inning, with Matthew DePrey getting aboard after being hit by a pitch and Andrew Walker taking a walk to put two on for Matt McCormick. McCormick singled to right field to drive in DePrey, giving Xavier the 1-0 lead.

The Red Storm pulled even in the bottom of the second with a solo home run, but Xavier got the run back in the next frame, after Andrew Walker took a lead-off double, moved to third on a fly ball to left from McCormick, and game home on a sac fly from Jared Cushing to move Xavier back in front 2-1.

Xavier added two more runs to the lead in the fourth, with Alex Helmin leading off the inning with a single, stealing second, getting to third on a double from Carter Hendrickson and scoring on a sac fly from Grant Stephenson. Hendrickson then score on a ground ball from Jack Housinger to make it a 4-1 Xavier lead.

The three-run lead held into the the eighth, with Brant Alazaus collecting seven strikeouts to limit the Red Storm to just four hits in the first seven innings. After a pair of singles in the eighth, Justin Loer entered from the bullpen to get the final out of the inning, limiting SJU to one run to set the final score at 4-2.

The series finale with the Red Storm is set for a 12:00 p.m. on Sunday at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

ON THE MOUND

Brant Alazaus went 7.2 innings in the start, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out seven and not giving up a walk. Alazaus picked up the win, moving to 7-3 on the season.
Justin Loer entered for the final out of the eighth with two runners on, limiting the Red Storm to one run in the inning. Loer pitched a scoreless 1.1 innings to close out the game, allowing only one hit and picking up a strikeout to pick up the save, his fourth of the season.

Jared Cushing went 1-2 with an RBI and stolen base.
Matt McCormick (1-4) finished with an RBI after driving Matthew DePrey in with a single in the first.
Grant Stephenson went 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base, driving in an RBI.

Andrew Walker (1-2, 2 BB), finished with a run scored and a stolen base.
