Xavier Wins Series at St. John's with 5-1 Win in Game Three

Musketeers secure bid to BIG EAST Championship
QUEENS, N.Y. -Â Xavier baseball secured the series against St. John's, taking two-of-three in Queens with a 5-1 win in the finale at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Sunday. The Musketeers move to 32-20 overall on the season and 13-5 in BIG EAST play.
Xavier scored a pair in the second inning after the first three batters got aboard, Matt McCormick on a hit-by-pitch, Jared Cushing on a single, and Alex Helmin with a walk. Grant Stephenson hit a one-out single to bring in McCormick and Cushing for the 2-0 lead.
Xavier added runs in the sixth and the seventh, with Andrew Walker scoring to make it a 3-0 lead in the sixth after a failed pick-off attempt of Matt McCormick, and Carter Hendrickson scoring in the seventh on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded from Walker.
The Musketeers held the Red Storm off the board into the eighth, with Luke Hoskins matching his career-long outing at 7.0 innings, not giving up a run.
St. John's scored a run in the eighth to cut the Xavier lead back to three, 4-1, but in the ninth, a single and a stolen base from Andrew Walker put a runner in scoring position for Tyler DeMartino, who doubled to bring Walker in, setting the final score at 5-1.
The series win against the Red Storm is the fourth series the Musketeers have taken in BIG EAST play. Xavier secured its bid to the four-team BIG EAST Championship in Mason, Ohio, over the weekend, Xavier's fourth-straight appearance in the conference tournament and the seventh time the Musketeers have made the BIG EAST Tournament in the nine years its been held since Xavier joined the conference.
Xavier wraps up non-conference play on Tuesday, May 16, heading to Michigan for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. The Musketeers then wrap up the regular season at home, hosting Georgetown for three games, starting on Thursday, May 18 and running through Saturday, May 20.

- Luke Hoskins went 7.0 scoreless inning in the start, giving up just five hits and matching his career-long outing from earlier this season against Ohio State. Hoskins finished with four strikeouts and no walks, picking up the win to move to 6-2 on the season.
